Living Space

** WE ARE LOOKING FOR MEMBERS **

We formed Living Space to meet the need for an affordable social housing that promotes a strong community cohesion between its members, their local community, and the environment following the 7 co-operative principles marked by the International Co-operative Alliance. We will not only embody these principles but we will also promote sustainable ways of living.

THE PLAN:
We are determined to create housing for 24 to 50 individuals. These will include families, single tenants, and couples who will live in a harmonious community where all ages can blend and share, learning from each other. We intend to achieve this by sharing the experience of building the houses ourselves. We will use inexpensive and sustainable means for building materials and insulation. We will aim to become 100% self-sufficient in energy, and at least 50% self-sufficient in food. In summary, our community will not only classify as a “zero carbon dwelling” but it will also benefit from being highly self-sufficient.

LIVING SPACE IDENTITY:
We believe that communal living within a green sustainable environment is the healthiest way of living. Through communal living self-responsibility, consensus democracy and solidarity is encouraged. Through living within a green sustainable environment empathetic behaviour, sustainable ways of living, appreciation of nature, and environmental responsibility is promoted. Finally, we hope that by sharing the experience of building the houses through a self-build scheme, Living Space members will develop a strong community bond that will nourish co-operative ways of living.

We believe that social isolation is a recipe for disaster; therefore we aim to integrate the local community in a multitude of activities and projects. These will aim to promote the seven co-operative principles, and to encourage communal living within a green sustainable environment. Participation on these projects is purely voluntary.

WHAT PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS NEED TO KEEP IN MIND:
Every member is ready to dedicate few hours a month to attend to meetings, to do some research on their own time, and most importantly to be committed to build the houses through a self-build or partially self-build scheme (all necessary training will be provided).

Living Space is a fully mutual housing co-operative reg#30929R.
