Roost Housing Co-operative
Roost Housing Co-operative Ltd. aims to establish a thriving community of people living and working in balance with the environment.
We plan to purchase land of 10 acres or more with a residential property and outbuildings. This will house initial members and give room to expand. Where needed we will carry out eco-conversion work on the main house. Depending on planning permission, new homes will be built through converting existing outbuildings and building new low-impact houses. Through this process we hope to house 4 to 6 families once the development work is complete.
All services will be designed along permaculture principles to have minimum impact on the environment. This will include heat and electricity produced from renewable sources, composting of waste and sustainable water systems provided on a community scale.
There will be communal facilities which will include kitchen, living room, outdoor cooking space, vegetable patch, office, workshop, forest garden and animal housing. To provide for and meet the needs of the community all members will commit a set number of hours a week to maintain and develop these communal resources.
In addition to working in the local community, members will be encouraged to develop livelihoods on the land. Some businesses being considered are; campsite, cafe, shop, food production and processing, training and workshops, woodcraft, music studio, events and crafts.
