Taraloka Buddhist Retreat Centre for Women
Taraloka is both a community and a Buddhist retreat centre for women, to which women come from all over the world to experience the calm, beautiful atmosphere which has built up over the twenty years of the centre’s existence. All of us living here are committed to Buddhist ideals and to creating the best possible facilities for women to come on retreat. For the purposes of our work, people have individual responsibilities for different work areas, for example cooking, maintenance or leading retreats, we also have one retired member. We all actively pursue the Buddhist way of life, following a daily programme of meditation, work and communal meals. There is a strong emphasis on ethical practice, aiming for more kindness, generosity, contentment, truthful speech and clarity of mind. Apart from our respective team meetings, we hold weekly community meetings and business meetings. We aim to be friendly and co-operative and decisions are arrived at through consensus. Taraloka is registered as a charity and all members receive the same basic support. We are all part of the Buddhist Movement the FWBO (Friends of the Western Buddhist Order) and we don’t have a system for accommodating volunteers from outside of the movement to work here. We mainly offer retreats for people who have had some experience within that movement, though some events are open to those with experience from other traditions. We also run Newcomers Weekends where we introduce meditation and Buddhism and there is an Open Day each year.
