ALIVE 50+
Our aim is to create an affordable, low-impact, inclusive environment for over 50s, with the objective of becoming self-sufficient in both energy and food, and proactively plan for a secure, fulfilled retirement as part of a caring supportive community. We plan to self-build a number of single storey dwellings, plus a community building with shared facilities to include a laundry, a communal kitchen and dining room, a multifunctional space which will be used for meetings, social events, exercise/evening classes and/or demonstrations. Other facilities will include: workshop(s) for crafts/homeworkers, depending on demand; additional accommodation for visitors/carers; tool pool; a farm shop selling excess produce/food co-op/buying group/community-owned shop (if sufficient demand exists).
We plan to take the oldest section of a 2.5 acre commercial greenhouse down, creating space for dwellings but retaining enough glass to grow food for the community. The buildings will face south and the PVs installed on the mono-pitch roofs will enable the community to generate electricity and sell back surplus energy to the grid via feed-in tariffs. Lifetime Living features will be incorporated into the build; however, in contrast to the usual mediocre retirement housing the design will be contemporary, stylish and uplifting to live in and – equally importantly - easy to maintain.
We are looking for people who have a strong sense of community and shared values, promoting mutual support and treating neighbours with respect. We’d love to hear from you if you’re interested to know more. Please email baughang@selby.ac.uk or telephone 01405 862511.
