****Seeking New Members!!!***
If you are thinking of downsizing or living more sustainably amongst a community of like-minded people with similar values, then cohousing may be for you.
We want to create an affordable, low-impact community for over 50’s who would like to live the ‘Good Life’, but can’t afford a ‘Grand Design’! Our plot is a 5 acre smallholding in peaceful, rural Yorkshire.
Currently there’s a lot of discussion going on and papers being published about the ‘baby boomer’ generation being unwilling to accept the choices currently on offer to people approaching retirement. However, these discussions are not yet resulting in any positive action and those of us facing an increasingly bleak future with astronomical energy prices and spiralling cost of living need to take matters into our own hands if we are to create a future we can look forward to, rather than fear.
We’re aspiring to something better than an off-the-peg, postage-stamp-sized ‘retirement home’ – beautiful, modern, easily managed and maintained homes built to Passivhaus standard with high levels of insulation, making them cosy and exceptionally energy-efficient as well as being environmentally-friendly. We want to self-build, to reduce costs.
The end result will be an active, supportive community that gets together regularly for meals, produces much of our own food and continues to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle in our later years. We’ll have a large commercial greenhouse, communal gardens and the shared resources of the communal building which will include laundry facilities, kitchen and dining area and space to meet for social activities, as well as accommodation for visitors.
If you want to find out more, there’s no better time to get involved! A long-awaited offer of funding from the Government has recently been announced which will help with development costs of the project, such as drawing up project plans, submitting planning applications etc. On top of this there’s also funding for community renewable energy projects. So we need enthusiastic, committed people to get the project up and running - if you’re interested, do get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!
