Galloway Cohousing

Cohousing is coming to Dumfries and Galloway! CoHousing is a way of living in an “intentional community” where the residents have their own front doors to their own homes but also share some communal space. This way of life is quite common in some European countries, particularly Denmark, and in the United States and Canada, and it is becoming popular in Britain. The whole point is that the residents can support each other: their communal building may house a laundry, possibly some workshops, a fitness room, but most importantly a communal kitchen and dining room where they can share meals, usually once or twice a week, although their houses and flats are fully equipped for cooking and independent living. All this can be on a rented basis or an ownership basis, depending on the wishes of the proposed resident.
Galloway CoHousing is a group of friends in the Stewartry who are planning to establish a community along the lines of the cohousing model, ideally within easy reach of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright or Dalbeattie. It may be a new-build or it may be an old building or buildings which could be adapted to suit their requirements. The plan would involve about 20 individual dwellings with enough space for a communal building as well. Buildings will be constructed to environmentally-friendly standards with plenty of light and insulation and possibly some renewable energy. Outdoor space is important; residents may have their own gardens and there will also be communal space. Looking after the environment is one of the priorities of the Galloway CoHousing.
