UK-wide organised settlements
Would anyone be interested in exploring the gradual deliberate formation of UK-wide low impact developments in such a way so that one place is never more than a day’s cycle or horse ride from the next? If you are buying land, have you thought of the UK scale strategic position?

A shared way of life in the North
We are a young couple expecting our first child. We are quiet, creative, homely people who find the rush and pressures of the modern world a bit overwhelming at times. We would like to meet other families, couples or like-minded individuals who would be interested in beginning a small co-housing or community type project, preferably in Yorkshire (we currently live in Hull). If you are interested in self-sufficiency and traditional skills, and desire a shared, simpler way of life, then please do get in touch.

Co-op or co-housing in South West
We are a couple looking for others to set up either a housing co-op or co-housing in the South West, ideally Dorset or Somerset.
We like the idea of having a site which could be used for courses or retreats, but not essential. We’d like some land to grow food. We value own space and communal space. We’d like to be close to a train station.
We’d like to find people who share our values not only concerning the environment but also we would not want to farm animals and we would like to live with people who share our anarchist leaning political motivations.

People To Help Set Up Community Living in Cornwall

I work part-time and don’t have any capital and I’m looking for others with ideas and physical capabilities to assist me in finding and setting up a small community with the essentials of organic garden/orchard and a few animals (preferably not for eating, but could be persuaded to compromise as I can’t have everything my way or it wouldn’t be a ‘community’!) I know there are lots of these places in existence so there is plenty info/models to follow. But I have to be within driving distance to Penzance for work!

Awesome housemates needed
I’m a twenty-summat who has spent years drifting around the planet and now, for various reasons, needs to settle for a few years back in the UK.
I would like to live in a house (possibly rural, probably in the southwest) that has a big garden and workshop space, and to share it with other creative, conscious and eco-minded young (at heart, of course ;)) people. Central aspects of the home will be communalism, food-growing, art/music, health and good vibrations.
I have hippie ideals but am a hands on person in life and for now, something that is in spirit somewhere between a co-op and a regular houseshare is where it would be cool to be.
I seek housemates, and of course a house.
If this resonates with you in any way, drop me a line!

We are looking for people and families interested in forming a veggie/vegan eco community near the sea in Dorset/SW England.
Based on permaculture and cohousing principles, we’d like to forge a healthier way of life: grow most of our own food and fuel; generate our own energy; share skills; provide a place for courses, activities, holidays, retreats; and create an abundant biodiverse forest garden to share. We hope to find somewhere with a rural feeling, but with good transport links and wider communities nearby.
We are aiming to move quickly and so are looking to purchase somewhere either with permission to build or existing dwellings; co-purchasing will be more affordable than doing it alone, but this will need financial and personal commitment. If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch.

I’m looking to start something up in Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire area. My dream is to buy some land or a run down property on lots of land and build a beautiful life with self sufficiency, family, love and the beauty of the natural world around us. However, this takes a lot of time, money and commitment and we need other like minded people to make this dream a reality. With that in mind, we are looking for other families or individuals to start a house share in which we can all work towards this goal together. Christ-loving health community
We are forming a community of people who want to grow closer to Christ and one another in sustainable community. Initially we hope to get to know each other, meet and worship together, and slowly develop a closer knit group, possibly living on the same plot, likely in the Lincolnshire/Yorkshire area.
Following Jesus and being a loving community is the focus, but an interest in health and the environment is also hoped for. There are people keen on a number of different areas, such as: raw foodism, self-sustainable living, smallholding, vegetarianism and freeganism.
The hope is that we will become a community that serves and loves the outside world, and may accept vulnerable people. However initially we seek to attract committed Christians to start and lead the shaping of the community.
The theology is fairly traditional. Loving, praying for and serving the poor, simplicity and holiness are all important, including celibacy outside marriage.
Please get in touch if you’re interested.

We are a family of 4 looking to find or form our own community where unschooling families are living together to help each other. We want to build a community with its foundation and strength in the family. To us our family should be the spiritual seed we share with our children. By having similar worldviews with other families we can be more confident of our choices.
We believe the earth is our mother, deserving our love and respect. Therefore we believe in birthing the way she intends both freely and naturally. Allowing our children to learn what they want, when they want. Keeping them free from exposure to television, toxic plastics and toxic vaccines.
Some words that describe us a bit further:
attachment parenting, multi-ethnic background, vegetarian, rasta, alcohol-free, tabacco free, spiritual aware but not religious.
Some of our experiences are:
- 4 years of living in a self-sustainability community in Northern Thailand building our own adobe house.
- 2 years of organic gardening in Wales, living in a wooden cabin with water from the river and solarenergy.
If you are an unschooling family that wants to live in harmony with other families, supporting each others wellbeing and growing together in nature, please contact us.

Rescuing animals in Spain
Are you an animal lover? Would you like to live communally/co-operatively? Want to get back to basics in a warmer, dryer climate?
I am looking for people who would like to set up an animal rescue centre/sanctuary in southern Spain. Some ideas I have so far are:
1 - Buy some cheap campo land (farmland) for ourselves and the animals.
2 - Arrange our own accommodation as individuals or small groups in mobile homes/caravans, yurts, wooden houses, etc. Getting permission for temporary buildings in rural Spain is easy.
3 - Alternatively, members could choose to live off-site in other owned or rented houses nearby.
4 - Be as self-sufficient as possible in energy and food.
5 - Provide a safe place for neglected and abused dogs, cats and other animals (dogs and cats are within my experience, but I’m very keen to find other people with ideas and experience to help other animals as well) in a homely rather than kennel type environment. Find permanent homes for as many animals as possible.
My big problem is that I have absolutely no money to put in! I do have lots of ideas for raising money, however, so all is not lost. I’d love to hear from anyone who wants to care for animals and would like to be part of this. As long as the health and happiness of the animals is the first concern for all of us, everything else can be worked out.

The Self Critical Coop
Your happiness is your responsibility. Your happiness is a form of self improvement that benefits you and the people around you. If I am not happy it is my fault and my judgement, empathy, compassion, forgiveness, ability to be generous and kind will be compromised by that.
I hope to live this way as an example that may influence others to choose and work towards being happier (studies whose references I will not place in this article have shown that smiling influences those around you to smile and just choosing to smile makes the brain think you are happier and the parts of the brain develop with regular use). I hope to find others who want to influence the world around them in this enriching way.
Respect as a form of kindness are paramount to this and that is why there will be a consensus decision making process. This consensus decision making process will be limited to activities and behaviours. Consensus is naturally limited in this way as the contents of one person’s mind is inherently impossible to be exactly the same as the contents of another person’s mind. Therefore thoughts and interpretations of are activities and behaviours outside the realms of requiring consensus i.e. if one person thinks something is an act of generousity and the other person thinks it is an act of solidarity there is no reason or need for them to agree on this.
I want to live by the principal that the things that make you unhappy are not as important as your happiness I hope you do too.
A Utopia is not built on blame, not that I want to build a Utopia.

Time for a change? investors wanted for retreat center and eco commune 2012
Are you a permaculturist, holistic therapist looking to join a small team, making a retreat center in mountains in Spain ... capital investment around 75k would in return buy you a home, business opportunity and an organic lifestyle growing food and laughter! Economic crisis? Toxic foods? A never ending worry of what’s around the corner? Our center would run retreat weeks to sustain our income ... with a system of raw foods and aquaponics ... no pesticides, with regular yoga, chigung, massage, sound healing, tipees and yurts as well as earth buildings ... with a natural spring water.
In addition a supermarket of trees providing foods for us to pick everday as well as battering with the community. The project would be a two and half hour journey from UK and climate will be max 28 in summer to 5 degrees winter ... air quality in mountains is rich in oxygen without pollution.
If you have a good heart, enjoy the company of others but also need your own space? Drawn to this then feel free to contact me ... also open to discussing part time or non residential opportunities where you invest in your health and stay for periods receiving healing in exchange for financial support in getting center off ground helping to purchase the solar and geothermal so we are living 100% free from energy bills. Im a yoga teacher and have successfully run an international business for 16 years and we currently have some very talented people on board wishing to manifest this shift, and looking to purchase property with extensive fertile land as well as buildings in excess of 250 to 750 euros ... in so creating a lifestyle we can only dream of alone ... together we can build a brighter more meaningful existence x. om shanti

Looking to start a Queer Eco project
Hello, We are a couple in our late twenties / early thirties aiming to set up a rural eco project. We are wanting the space to be a rural alternative to urban queer migration, creating a none hetero-normative space in the countryside for people who don’t identify with mainstream ideologies of gender and sexuality. We have lived in a queer community before, but envisage a more green set-up for this one. We have 20k to invest in land, but are looking for like minded people to help us create something sustainable for ourselves and future generations.
We want the project to be off grid, and aim to grow food based on permaculture prinicipals. We have just finished converting a big van which would be our living space, and we would be aiming to build compost toilet, solar showers, and have a semi-outdoor kitchen and social space. Other ideas include outside film screening area, small stage, library, creative space etc.... (just ideas for the projects longer term development)
We would want the project to be open to guests and volunteers. There would be yurts and tipis as accomodation, which would be offered for visitors. This would be part of the income, as well as workshops and events (things like yoga and holistic therapies, crafts etc.) We would also probably have an annual radical faerie gathering. We welcome any other ideas. We would also sell some surplus veg at local markets.
We have initially been looking at land in Portugal for the climate, and the fact that the land is cheap, and it is legal to live a low impact life on the land. See the following website for an idea of the spaces available for less than £50,000, we would be looking at a couple of acres of land - http://www.pureportugal.co.uk/under50.html
If you are interested, or share our vision, get in touch with your ideas if you are interested.

In search of a tribe....
We are a French-Dutch couple (Kim, 36 and Fred 32),and our two kids, Mayi and Leo, 2 and 4.
And we are looking for our tribe...
The aim is to live with the least amount of money as possible, being self sufficient and being able to offer our kids a gentle and more natural way of life where we only take what we need and give back what we take.
To make a long story short, here are some keywords describing our vision and values : Freebirth, baby wearing, co-sleeping, nappy free, extended breast-feeding, natural immunity, non-violent communication, unconditional parenting (hard one for me! Fred), radical unschooling, wool fetishist, ringing cedars series, continuum concept, communal living / looking for our tribe, to reconnect with Nature within and without. But most and for all to just enjoy each others company and have fun ...
In the long term we’d like to create a food forest based on permaculture and bio-dynamic principles. Couple of goats for raw cheese and milk, chickens and geese for eggs, a donkey for fun and transport. We’re also inspired by Mark Boyle, the moneyless man and we’d love to create a community based on something else than money. We believe in a resource based economy. Where giving is unconditional.
Well thats about it in a nutshell!! Most important thing for us is that the children can be children and grow up in an environment where the can just BE who they are ... We have come across so many intentional communities that aim to be or are green, self-sufficient, low-impact etc, but in all of these places children still go to school, or are raised in a conventional way ... we believe that it does not matter how green you are and how much you want to take care of the planet ... you can only change things in the core by changing the way we conceive, birth and raise our children ... all the rest is a bonus! We are not meant to raise our children in a nuclear family, so we really want to find our tribe and have an extended family in close approximity to us ... an old indian saying says: it takes a village to raise a child ...
in Light and Love.

Anyone for co-purchase of a large house in Hastings/Margate?
Would you to live near the sea, but are tied to working in the south east or London (at least some of the time)?
Maybe are you depressed at the prospect of a ‘starter flat’ and want to live somewhere grander?
Or are you dreaming of a second base away from London?
I am looking for people (who like me, can raise around £90-130,000 equity) to come in with me to buy a large house in one of the above towns, to be arranged as a number of apartments, but with some shared facilities. For not much more than £400k you can pick up a lovely 6-8 bedroomed house with a garden, close to the station and sea, that with some work would make a lovely home for four or five couples /singles. These are towns are within reach of London, and with gorgeous buildings and beaches. Property is cheap because they have had the reputation of being rough and there is not much work locally, but i reckon that needn’t be a problem: after all there is a growing arts scene in both, and so many of our jobs now don’t need more than wi-fi, a mobile, and maybe one or two days a week in London.
I am a 40 year old gay guy who is sociable, and want to have the option of living with others around, but with private space, and with the flexibility to live in more than one place. Basically, the best of all worlds!!!
There could be all sorts of ways this might work financially: I have two flats in London (edge of zone 1), so although I could also contribute the equity, one arrangement could be I contribute to the deal free accommodation in my London flat, for those needing to be in London some days of the week.
I am an architect and have project managed a number of restoration jobs, as well as build a whole house up in the mountains in Spain.
There are various ways in which this could work, but I think it would best suit those with a desire to have a bolt hole away from London!!
Anyway, those are my thoughts so far, sorry if i have dwelt on the boring practicalities of finance, but I get the feeling that the ideal of co-housing hits the buffers due to the difficulty in finding a site, lack of finance, or being far from gainful employment to have many punters.
So these are my first thoughts... Would love to hear from anyone out there who might be interested!!!
Note, I am posting this in Oct 2013, if you still see this, it is worth contacting me, it is still ‘live’.

I’ve started putting my ideas and a bit about myself on the web at http://zen-sustainable-living.blogspot.co.uk/ but I’m busy with a software project until end of September so I won’t be adding to it until then. Sorry there’s no anchor tags allowed so you’ll have to copy and paste the URL.
And now for the blurb. I’ve spent 20 years thinking about earthships surrounded by trees, I think it’s time I made a move. I’ve built a few principles into the current house e.g. annual heat storage, earth pipes, solar hot water an earth berming to see how they perform. I’ve successfully tested forest gardening on 500m2 with a large number of fruit & nut trees under storied with fruit bushes & strawberries and now perennial vegetables are being added. Forest gardening is easier to manage on a scale large enough to become self sufficient than till, toil & plant out annual veggies; I do like to sit on my swing seat wearing a gormless expression so I don’t want to spend year upon year breaking my back digging. I’d prefer somewhere where the land is not dominantly owned by corporations & aristocrats driving the acreage price up and creating laws to keep me from working the land and a place with more sunshine, not necessarily hotter, Central Portugal seems to fit the bill. It’s not the cold that gets to me but the grey skies. After a week of fog I feel like I’ve been living in a Dickens novel & I’d prefer a D H Lawrence one. I’m currently looking for land but my family do not want to move with me so it will probably be 3 years before I can permanently move. I have £20k cash, in 2013, but I write software so I can double that every year. I could afford enough land for myself now but sharing skills and/or costs would make life easier if it was with the right people.
One of my views of the world is that people are alienated from their place in the cycle of life, duped by religion, politics & media. Their moral fibre numbed by consumerism. My ideas are influenced by Buddhism and Taoism. I’m interested in meeting relaxed people to see if we have enough in common to share a few hectares. If you might be interested let me know what you’d like to do and who you are, your email would elicit a response, generally a nice one for I’m not a sociopath. Never end your text with the word sociopath, damn!

A couple of months ago I placed a message:
Art Community/Tribe; A vision. Physical realm; Imagine this; easy reach (walking/cycling) of the centre of a small market town. A large house with many outbuildings in 2+ hectares of land with a stream. Room for art workshops, course centre, healing centre, arts and music cafe ; you name it ; Yes, it exists about 12 miles away from where I am writing this! ** see below
Emotional realm ; Room for couples/singles/young/old (a tribe) indeed. Requirements , tolerance/non-dogmatic attitudes/love/creativity/understanding.
Spiritual realm; Love for Gaia/Shakti Ma/God/Great Spirit and all her manifestations and creations, including each other!
Myself ; ready for change; recently retired at 65, open, loving, creative, practical, energetic, green, veggie, non judgemental (apart from unthinking right-wingers!). (I have space to host a gathering of people who respond to this advert in my eco-hovel in Normandy, Orne dept. (off the grid, 12v lighting, compost toilet, communal meals, camping, or sleep in the meditation room, 250 years of solid stone-built history). One hour and a half from the ferry from Portsmouth at Caen. Can meet people from the ferry).
** The property is in La Ferte Mace, Orne dept. – it is for sale at 250,000 euros. Ideal for a community to buy it after creating a trust to own it. It is not often that a property so tailor made for a community comes up for sale so close to a town with all facilities, architectural merit and just aching for an exciting Arts Community on its doorstep. At a fraction of the price the same place would be if it was in the UK.
If we miss this one there will be others.
I have now had 6 replies to my ad in D&D from some very interesting people and have tried to engage them by writing personally to each one, but as yet no-one has taken the plunge and come here to co-create with me and to bring people from far and wide to workshops that, hopefully will be life-changing for them and for us who give them. My idea has been on and off the back burner for some time, but has now become more and more relevant in my life. I get a small pension (being 65) and can live here in my eco-hovel without breaking the bank. It was bought from a fortunate legacy and costs virtually nothing to run (no services and 12v solar light, compost toilet etc.) So I can exist on my pension, small though it is. But I want my tribe. I want to co-create with them, a special place from which we can impart to whoever attends the workshops, techniques for releasing the creative spirit within, and to blossom with new confidence and knowledge. Our specialties can be - art of all types, story, costume, dance, the healing arts, yoga et al. What we can offer depends on whoever we are as a tribe. My specialty is photography. When I was lecturing in photography at Truro College, I loved teaching, esp. the vocational courses. But I found the AS and A level courses a bit like a sausage factory, part of a team of teachers with over 200 students. A bit soulless and institutional. So I wrote a workshop, drawn from my life and my experience that I would love to teach as a part of a team – a tribal team- people I love and live with of different ages and different skills. Perhaps YOU would also like to teach your speciality in Art, Healing, Music etc. from YOUR heart. When I started writing the workshop structure, I envisaged holding them at West Country UK venues and did quite a bit of research and costings. I did not find a co-leader and put the project on the back burner. It also seemed to me that the amount it would cost a participant was quite high and a lot of the fees would go to the venue providers.
If we were a community (commune) big enough to be our own venue, the total fees the participants pay would go to support us and the courses we could offer would be much wider because collectively we will have more skills and interests. The Vladimir Megre, talks about how we should live in KINS Domains. Groups have formed along these lines and there is a definite connection with the eco-village movement, both existing and forming; but for me, they sometimes seem a bit exclusive and “holier than thou” living a life apart from society, which I am sure suits many, and that is fine. What I envisage is a bit different in that we would be a group readily accessible and welcoming to people who will really benefit from the workshops we offer. That is how we will fund ourselves in the real world. We will be an inspiration to others, living and sharing together in (again borrowing from the Ringing Cedars) A Space of Love. When some of us, hold a workshop the others do everything to support. We therefore rotate roles, cooking, cleaning and assisting wherever is needed as well as leading workshops in our own specialities. Supporting each other as a family might have done 100 years ago, out of love and commitment. Our love as well as our skills will change the lives of our participants. Getting together a venue large enough to hold us and our participants would be very difficult in the UK, where prices are enormous. This is not so much the case here in Normandy. I put up the original message because I saw just the right place!! It shone out to me from the agent’s window – a definite attack of “The Flow” saying “this is what you need”. After I put the ad in, I went back to the agent to be told that the place was sold and the Compromi was signed. However, looking around in other agents windows, I saw at least two more places that would be fine, including one with two very beautiful lakes.
Blimey! I seem to be writing an essay! Keep in touch and mention this to your friends. It will only take a few of us to be the core group. We can live at minimal cost at my eco-hovel whilst we fall in love, form our association to raise the money to buy a large property, sell our own properties and move into the next phase of our lives together. If you feel moved, come here! It’s a tall order but change always is. Shanti Shanti.
