Quaker Community
We live in a group of stone buildings that previously housed the Water Board. Most families have a self-contained living space; for single people and couples there are two flats and several bed-sits, with some shared use of the large communal kitchen. Of the 15 people over 18, two are young adults who are not members of the Community. The children range in age from thirteen to fifteen. We have communal meals three times a week. Our main shared activity is looking after 10 acres of land. Part of this is cultivated as organic vegetable gardens and a forest garden. Much of the rest is woodland and wetland, which we maintain as a nature reserve. We continually seek to reduce our environmental footprint through energy conservation, re-cycling etc.
Quaker meetings are held on Sundays and on an ad hoc basis during the week. We hold weekly house meetings and quarterly housing co-op meetings, with our decision-making process based on the Quaker business method. We also have monthly meetings for sharing ideas and feelings, with the aim of facilitating communication and dealing with conflict. Our mortgage, bills and other costs are shared between adult members. Members are responsible for supporting themselves financially.
Visitors are welcome at some of our Working Weekends. Please write with an SAE. We have wheelchair access to the ground floor.
