Edinburgh Student Housing Co-operative is a 106 member fully mutual co-operative, entirely self-managed by its members. Student housing co-operatives are a new phenomena in Britain, first starting in 2014, with ESHC currently the largest. Alongside being a unique experiment in communal living, the co-operative is also the city’s cheapest student housing provider by a sizeable margin.
The co-operative uses a participatory, consensus based model, with all major decisions being made by general meeting. ESHC also has two large communal basement spaces, regularly playing host to bands, film nights, political discussions, community groups, theatre groups and parties. The co-operative has a growing radical library, which we plan to make available to non-members as well.
From plumbing to feminism, the co-operative is also a great place to learn new skills, and explore new ideas. As part of being self-managed, members are able to take part in training workshops in facilitation skills, conflict mediation, basic accounting, first aid, and more.
Applications for membership are open each spring to students from any of the city’s universities or colleges. Applications are extremely competitive, so do get in touch for more information before applying.
ESHC is a member of Students for Cooperation, a national federation of student co-operatives through which it works to set up new co-ops.
If you’re in the city then do pop by for a cup of tea and a tour.
