We are a co-operative of people living and working together in a mixed woodland by Dartmoor. We are running a permaculture project to explore and demonstrate low impact living, integrating conservation woodland management (such as coppicing and broadleaf planting) with organic growing, new technologies and traditional skills.
We are living in wood heated bender-style and timber frame dwellings, with a communal Longhouse, Kitchen and Bathhouse.
We have a micro hydro scheme and solar panels to generate electricity, from which we run lighting, computers and kitchen appliances. We have a policy of minimising our use of fossil fuels, but we do use petrol chainsaws.
We spend our time maintaining and improving our dwellings and infrastructure, coppicing, conifer felling and native tree planting, gardening, home educating, running courses, on outreach, and on working for social, spiritual and personal change. There are chickens and goats on site. Most of our cash income comes from running courses (see website for current courses) and some of us have part time jobs (eg. as bushcraft instructors).
We have a veg growing area and young forest garden. We are a communally vegetarian community. We were granted a second period of temporary planning permission to live here and run the project in 2009. We welcome visitors and wwoofers (please contact us first to arrange this). Our website contains our latest news and events alongside ‘how to’ guides, a photo gallery and more.
