Arcadia for All

The Legacy of a Makeshift Landscape

From Canvey Island to Jaywick Sands, and from Peacehaven to Pitsea - this book uncovers the inspiring history of the Plotlands Movement and shows what ordinary people are capable of when left to their own devices. In the early years of the 20th century thousands of people in Britain built their own homes, without benefit of local authority planners and mortgage lenders. These 'plotlanders' lived in settlements made up of shacks and converted railway carriages. They are the ancestors of New Age travellers - seeking a place where they could live on their own terms while consuming fewer resources and making only small demands on the environment.
